Dear customers: Historic Norcross is quickly becoming a destination for the Arts. I've been a Board Member of the Norcross Arts Alliance for 2 years and we are in the process of trying to acquire this building, 54 Jones St, which is located in Downtown Historic Norcross and make it an Art Incubator for the city, but, with anything you do you need $$$. So, we've applied for a grant through Pepsi and we need your vote.

STUDIO 54 - Historic Norcross Arts Incubator VOTE HERE!

Goals

To provide an ideal environment for small creative businesses
To provide retail space and resources for these businesses to grow
Classes, Workshops, viewing artists at work improves quality of life
Six small creative businesses will help grow and keep downtown vibrant

Overview

Studio 54 will serve as an arts incubator in Historic Norcross providing six individual business spaces and one common retail space. An addition must be constructed to house a store front. This incubator coupled with a retail store front will complement both the city's effort to attract destination businesses and the goal of NAA to enhance the quality of life in our community through art. By providing reasonably priced studio space with the proper resources, much needed, affordable space and support not currently available in this diversely populated area will be provided for small creative businesses. To insure the success of the incubator, tenants will be required to attend: initial orientation, monthly tenant lunch to share business practices and support, quarterly marketing class, quarterly business acumen class, quarterly strategy meeting. Tenants are also required to develop classes, workshops or volunteer in NAA community outreach programs.

How will the 50K be Used?
Budget Notes: Total cost of the front room addition is estimated at $63,000: $10,500 design and mgmt., $50,000 construction fees, $2,500 contingency fees. NAA is submitting formal request for the remaining $13,000 to Norcross City Council for approval. Initial feedback has been positive.

NEVA'S NOTE:

Hello everybody! I'm sitting here watching it snow sideways. Great site, but honestly, we're gearing up for Spring. Next month will be the beginning of all the special festivals that we have in Historic Norcross and as much as I've tried to explain to the powers above that it makes parking difficult for customers, they still want to carry on, so carry on it is. So, my advice is to start paying close attention to the rest of my e-news so that you won't miss a single thing going on around here.

My dad, John, had a great 90th birthday. We celebrated the whole week. Thanks everybody for the nice cards and well wishes.

Always come back to these e-news and check to see if they have been updated as I have a tendency to do that. I don't want you miss out on the news.

ENTREPRENEUR'S CORNER

As you all know, I'm an entrepreneur. I currently have 2 of my own businesses up and running, Norcross Barber Shop and Neva Spell Photography. I'm very fortunate to rent this space in Historic Norcross so why not help other entrepreneurs? So, I started carrying products that I find interesting and would like to highlight them. Here is my first:

This cleaning pad was invented by customer, Tom Day, who lives in Norcross. I've tried it on several different hard-to-clean surfaces and it works really well. I retail a single pad for $6.95 Be sure and check it out when you come in for your monthly haircut.

Norcross High School Basketball is EXCITING! They are winding down the season but there are more home games to enjoy. Be sure and catch some of the action! You can find the schedule through the SCOREBOARD link below. NHS completed their season 23-2, won the 7AAAAA Region and now are on to the State Playoffs. Stay tuned for updated scores!

HAPPY 2010!

I want to thank everybody who spent their hard earned $$$ in Downtown Historic Norcross over the holidays. We REALLY APPRECIATE it. Here is the list of all the local shop, restaurants and some of our professional businesses in Downtown Historic Norcross. To keep them open we need to SHOP LOCAL!

Here are a few things to remember:

1. This blog is embedded in my Norcross Barber Shop website. If you go to the top of this page you can find all sorts of links. If you click on one of them, a menu will drop down and there's even more to look at.

5. NEVA'S NOTE
A new year. This is our 12th Anniversary for Norcross Barber Shop. To tell you the truth, it has flown by. I've had a great 12 years and hope to have several more.

I can remember the day we opened, I was a nervous wreck, wondering if anybody would show up for a haircut. Well, we opened the doors and they came flying in that very morning. It has been a very good business and Norcross has been a great place to work.

There's not much going on for this month but I still wanted you to hear from me and let you know about a few changes on my website.

Here are a couple of things you can do to make it easy:
1. Bookmark or Favorite our website's HOME PAGE so that you can come back to it when you have a question.
2. The e-News will remain a page embedded in my website so you can always refer back to it.
3. Keep our Norcross Barber Calender of Events handy so you can refer back to it to see what is going on in Historic Norcross or any changes for the Barber Shop.
4. My goal is to send out a monthly email that will alert you that the e-News has been posted for the current month. Of course, I will update the e-News, Calender of Events or any information on my website as things change or are added, so always check back for the current information. Or CALL ME if there are any questions.
5. Check you spam box! My emails do land there at times.

Well, we're at the end of another year. What's going on with time speeding up? It's going faster and faster. Wasn't it just the 4th of July the other day?

This has been a difficult year for a lot of people so I'm very thankful that my Barber Shop, even though it has slowed down a little, we still continue to serve up those haircuts and remain open. I've actually seen several shops close, so, I'm very blessed and all because of your support. Thank you.

A quick update on my Dad: He's doing great and working on Saturdays but NOT on Mondays. In fact, you should know this already, we have started closing on Mondays.

This is the last e-News for 2009. Don't worry there will plenty more to come starting in 2010. Always check my NORCROSS BARBER CALENDER OF EVENTS to see if anything has been added or changed. UPDATE ON CLOSED HOLCOMB BRIDGE RD
If you try to enter the Historic Downtown Norcross area coming in from Peachtree Industrial on Holcomb Bridge Rd., you're not going to be able to get through. It's still blocked off. The road was washed out during our torrential ran about a month ago. This is a County road and they have started the wheels rolling to fix it but the rain and the slow moving government is causing it to take a while to get fixed. I've heard it may be the end of October before it's fixed but I think it will go into November. My advice, if you're concerned, is to avoid the area until my next e-News. Sorry.

Historic Norcross Imagination Tour
WHEN: November 7th
WHERE: Downtown Historic Norcross
TIME: 1-8pm

Jump on board Time Trolleys that will cruise guests through the Historic District and its outskirts, past churches, cemeteries, historic homes and parks, with an on board narrator describing points of interest along the way. Stories of train robberies, storefront shoot outs, travelin’ preachers, baseball heroes and civil war skirmishes have been compiled by playwright and Lionheart Theatre actor, James Beck, in association with Sally Toole, author of, ‘Remembering Norcross; Nuggets of Nostalgia’.

This book is for sale in the Barber Shop.

While you're here, stroll the sidewalks of Norcross’ quaint downtown and enjoy live music – local shops, art galleries and restaurants will host art showings, artist demonstrations and silent auctions offering an assortment of “must have” treasures. Neva Spell Photography will have a silent auction item to bid on inside Norcross Barber Shop during the Imagination Tour. The Tour is a non-profit event, with proceeds benefiting public elementary schools within the City of Norcross.
